daiko's Media Thread

Now playing: Mario Artist: Talent Studio - The Catwalk

Let's Mini!

I'm sure you read the top of this page, but this is where I archive my media thread each year! If you don't know what that is, I'm basically just doing some very light journaling about new things I played/watched/listened to each year. It's a useful hobby for me, because I'm the sort of person that easily gets stuck in their comfort zone, rarely giving new, unknown movies or shows or games a chance. If it's on my media thread, it's because it's something I've never experienced before! Let's discover cool new stuff together! (Or sometimes not so cool! You gotta be prepared to roll snake eyes every now and then when trying out new things!)

I'm not sure how I will be archiving past media threads... probably within the sidebar on the left. For now, 2025 (current year) will be active below.

DaikoCHANNEL Mini '25 (Year of the Snake)
  • ๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™‚๏ธ #035 - Dispatch
  • well technically i watched my friend play the entire thing but i was really invested! (waiting for each new episode was tough) this game has some really endearing character writing and i love it for that but i found the youtuber voice actors distracting. mid character designs too

  • ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ #034 - Weapons (2025)
  • watched this back during halloween. it's awesome i loved it!!

i normally can't do scary movies at all, but the director being one of the people from WKUK tints the film with comedy in a way that doesn't detract from the horror or the mystery. a compelling movie that i wanna rewatch

  • ๐ŸŽฃ #033 - Umihara Kawase (SFC)
  • i fuck with the fish aesthetic!! it sort of reminds me of daisuke amaya's games in both concept and presentation, but i absolutely can't do this kaizo shit. i managed to get the field 57 ending but fully mastering the gameplay with these wacky ass physics is beyond me

  • ๐Ÿ’ป #032 - Chobits: Atashi Dake no Hito
  • it's the first half of the chobits anime retold in barebones visual novel form. this game released days after chobits' final episode aired, so i struggle to see the appeal for a fan at the time when it's basically rehashing half of the anime you just watched

  • ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ #031 - Slayers (SFC)
  • genuinely the worst rpg i've ever played in my life
it's kind of hard to point at one specific thing as the "really particularly bad" part because the entire thing is a complete fucking car crash from top to bottom

don't be fooled by the very nice rui araizumi art, this blew

it's so bad i'm probably going to write at length about its manifold failures on daikonet so look forward to that

please enjoy this timestamped sample of Slayers SNES's poignant, understated soundtrack in the meantime (this is one of the first tracks you hear in the game)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=1191&v=X7NLOeOoWB8&feature=youtu.be

  • ๐Ÿ›€ #030 - Bubble Bath Babes
  • you'd be surprised how fun the gameplay is, actually!! it's not amazing but i was more entertained than i thought i'd be

um the only other string to this game's bow is the authentic bootleg nes nudity, but the dialog is so embarrassing it's unreal & the art's meh so. pass

  • ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ #029 - Training Day (2001)
  • acab

denzel washington completely steals this movie, i can take or leave ethan hawke. the cameos by snoop dogg and dr. dre were incredibly distracting but i really liked this movie, it's like if disco elysium was epic

  • ๐Ÿ‘ #028 - Rollerball (1975)
  • the idea of a dystopian sports film is not a trope i've had too much exposure to so this seemed kind of cool, in a corny 1970s counterculture way? but it was intensely boring, the film's lead was completely flat and the movie was bookended with dracula music. what??

i don't know how you fumble making a movie about a sport as ridiculous looking as rollerball but they did. the roller derby/martial arts/motocross hybrid is completely insane this is the only thing that could make me a sports fan

i can't wait to watch the remake some day, i heard it's awful

  • ๐ŸŽณ #027 - Super 10 Pin
  • really really fun!! i finished every lane in one sitting. the aesthetics are literally perfect, i've seen a lot of indie games emulate ps1 graphics but this game feels literally 1:1 with the N64. the compression on images and audio feels so correct

i love how this game looks! the ost matches the game perfectly, its a lot of jungle and ambient dnb. the entire game feels like a friday night in summer, i feel like i found a new comfort game

  • ๐Ÿ—ป #026 - PEAK
  • i resisted getting it but my friend bought it for me and i ended up really really enjoying it. its a super fun multiplayer game for me and my friends to play now! we were looking for something like that

i love the way campers look with the baby hands and the eye contact in multiplayer

  • ๐Ÿ‘ฝ #025 - Birdy the Mighty (OVA)
  • sound the double goat alarm!!!!!! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ tsutomu and birdy are the newest members of my favorite anime characters list!

extremely cool and expressive animation from madhouse and also the character designs and art style are unreal. i loved this ova to pieces

(series by masami yuki btw, the patlabor guy. i thought that was interesting)

  • ๐Ÿ‘ฐ #024 - Tess of the d'Urbervilles
  • an 1891 novel that caused a stir and was censored on publication for suggesting that rape victims don't deserve to become social pariahs. stay classy victorian england

thomas hardy has an incredible skill for description and i found myself completely absorbed even amidst the sometimes exhausting 1800s-style run on sentences, but that's just how writing was so yknow

anyway angel clare is on my top 5 list for fictional characters i think deserve to be executed like a north korean general (strapped to a howitzer)

it has a bunch of adaptations and i was planning on watching the 1979 film directed by roman polanski soon. anyway great book, i really recommend it

  • ๐ŸŒŠ #023 - Pacific (1978)
  • the album's jazzy, summer-y lounge sound has been the soundtrack of my move across the country this summer, and it's already grown to mean so much to me as a sort of reassuring thing to re-listen to amidst these big changes in my life. favorite tracks are Kiska and Coral Reef

  • ๐Ÿ”‘ #022 - Sonic Labyrinth
  • i was surprised by how charmed i was by this game! it's cute and super short and the lightweight game objective (get da keys and find the door) made it really approachable despite the unusual isometric perspective. however this would probably suck eggs if i didn't have maps

if i had to play this game as a kid completely blind i can't imagine i'd be very happy with this game. you also go absolutely uncontrollably fast when spindashing and while the main stages don't have rings to worry about, there is a time limit and ricocheting off literally everything gets annoying

  • ๐Ÿš€ #021 - Gunbird
  • holy fucking shit this game is impossibly hard!!!!! i only barely managed to complete one loop by savestating maybe every 3 seconds. i'm not built for this and idk who is tbh

the game is as pretty as it is difficult though, the pixel art and character designs are extreme kino ๐Ÿ‘

  • ๐Ÿงฟ #020 - Magical Drop II (SFC)
  • pretty dang fun!! i'm a massive puyohead so anything falling block adjacent is gonna be pretty cool imo. ive heard this is not the best port and that everything from character designs to music to gameplay is improved in magical drop III but this one can hang

  • ๐Ÿ‘… #019 - Magical Taruruuto-kun: Fantastic World!!
  • this game has some truly ass level design. when its not being repetitive it's being lowkey malicious even as early as the first few levels. also you use your tongue to attack and collect takoyaki and the hitbox for it feels microscopic

also this game had a hidden nudity easter egg for like 30 years and it was only discovered semi-recently

this IS tatsuya egawa we're talking about so i guess it shouldn't be a surprise

  • ๐Ÿงฒ #018 - Magnet Girl
  • extremely jank controls and hardly features the use of magnets as a gameplay mechanic outside of the reversed polarity of certain blocks making you float an extra tile off the ground. i can't say i enjoyed it but apparently there are two sequels so maybe those are better

  • ๐Ÿฅœ #017 - Barbie in the Nutcracker
  • watched it for essentially no reason with some friends because one of them said it was peak. the absence of bibble is sorely felt, and as a result i'm afraid i can't give Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001) a full-throated endorsement.

  • ๐Ÿงผ #016 - Shampoo
  • kinda plays like qix? you move a cursor across the black part of the screen to draw a square where the mediocre hentai art will be revealed under a time limit. also the music is awful. par for the course w/ the pc-8800 though, there are a lot of these games, its not shampoo's fault

  • ๐Ÿงฉ #015 - Blue Mint
  • a sliding block puzzle game for the PC-8800. there's literally nothing to say, i guess the art is kind of charming. i hate these kinds of puzzles and the last one is completely diabolical being 8x6 and having a bunch of repeating brick tiles that can easily be in the wrong places

before you ask this was also for retroachievements, i would never play this crap for any other reason. these puzzles pissed me off in runescape and they piss me off here too

  • ๐Ÿ’ธ #014 - Pachinko Sexy Reaction 2
  • yeah i played the squeakuel, what of it?? it was for retroachievements ok

the art is significantly worse, doesn't animate, and...... i get how this sounds because its all kind of gross, but this game feels significantly more leering and slimy than the first one

  • ๐ŸŽฐ #013 - Pachinko Sexy Reaction
  • it's pachislot, but with animated babeulons getting they animated boobulons out when you win!! awesome!!! the animation is pretty cute, with character designs by kotoyoshi yumisuke, of Saber Marionette J fame. my only question is why was this an arcade cabinet

i just. it's 18+ so it can't go in a regular arcade, but a pachinko parlor already has machines. for the record this game has nothing of value besides the cute animation, these types of gambling games are insanely evil... however, i do like to look at nipples so i guess i can forgive the horrors /s

  • ๐ŸŒด #012 - Logic Island
  • a cute little piece of gameboy homebrew. it's just a bunch of nurikabe puzzles, and there isn't much to say about it but i found it really satisfying and a fun brain-smoother while i was stressed about my ssd failure. here's da link: tardigrade-nx.itch.io/logic-island

  • ๐Ÿ’ #011 - Diamond Jubilee (2024)
  • "Andy Cush of Pitchfork gave the album a 9.1/10 review, calling it "an essential trove of music" where "each song is like a foggy transmission from a rock 'n' roll netherworld with its own ghostly canon of beloved hits".[11]"

feels like home, it's really good

  • ๐Ÿฉธ #010 - Blood Blockade Battlefront
  • um, i would describe the story as 'incoherent', there's so much going on and so little explanation that i sort of just felt like i was being lobotomized every time i tried to focus on what was happening. who are any of these people. what are these powers they have

  • ๐Ÿ›น #009 - Go! Go! Hypergrind
  • i've already nearly 100%ed it. this is maybe one of my new favorite games ever

i'm really sad poponchi didn't survive as a studio after this game's release, this is their only game afaik. anyway if you like THPS you might really enjoy this game, give it a shot!!

the game's got some rough spots, namely the character designs (everyone except decker sucks, kinda) and there's some real jank with the battle minigame. i can only assume since its a gamecube title that maybe there was some contractual requirement to make a local multiplayer mode. shame it stinks

  • ๐ŸŒš #008 - Until Dawn (Remaster)
  • watched a longplay with some friends. i wanted everyone dead at one point or another and it was extremely unscary (and i hate horror!! im a huge pussy!!), but i was entertained enough i guess. idk if its worth 60$

  • โ™Ÿ #007 - Videoplay-20: Schach
  • an extremely early chess game released only in germany (hence "Schach") running on the Fairchild Channel F, a console developed by a camera company in 1976. because of the console's limited processing power, ai difficulties above 4 can make turns take an hour or longer

also it plays a shrieking cacophony of horrible 1970s console bleeps when you win, i would describe it as resembling a creepypasta game's jumpscare more than a jingle or whatever the hell it was supposed to be. i hope this interesting game entertained at least one person back in west germany

also a1 is just inaccessible due to a bug so white is missing one of its rooks

  • ๐Ÿ’Ž #006 - Lala the Magical
  • some nes homebrew i tried out, it was only three stages so it wasn't that bad but it was pretty tedious. enemy placement and level design seemed designed to maximize annoyance rather than be challenging. short game though and it worked pretty well, i was expecting more jank

  • ๐Ÿ”ฎ #005 - Sorcerer Hunters
  • holy hell this series might have some of the best character designs of any anime, even one-off characters look baller

its a shame this anime has no plot or character development until like the last 5 episodes. as an anime its only ok but i've heard the manga is way better

love dotta (daughter??) and gateau so much tho they are so perfect to me!! contenders for new favorite characters and its entirely the character designs that r convincing me

jacked blonde incredibly 90s man in jeans is so kino im kin assigning yoruko to dotta as well alright ok

  • ๐Ÿ“บ #004 - Good Morning
  • this was a very smartly made movie with interesting things to say about rote, meaningless communication between adults in everyday life. its easy to see why yasujiro ozu gets so much praise if all of his films are shot as beautifully as this one was

i found the interconnected vignette story-structure interesting, but a little dry...... i would describe the movie's pace as meandering, i guess. idk i wasn't super gripped but thats okay because every shot in this movie looks like God, i'm interested in his other films for the camera work alone

  • ๐Ÿ’Š #003 - Silviana: Ai Ippai no Boukensha
  • super cute and fun!! this is a very basic MSX2 rpg that sort of plays like hydlide and the early ys games. silviana shoots from the hip fr this game is extremely straightforward and it remedied the stressful day i had after i beat it in one 8 hour session

silviana's mom is sick and so you travel to the mirrored demon world and freeze the earth's oceans to pick up some tylenol for her. its just really charming, silviana is gaming's most likable protagonist and it's not even close.

bump combat is super satisfying, the game is low-stakes rpg fun. i want more

  • ๐Ÿฆ #002 - Keio Flying Squadron
  • a brief but really hard sega cd game i've been struggling with since 2024. i'm not really a shoot 'em up player and i don't think this is the game to change my mind, but the art is really cute! featuring some highly compressed animation courtesy of studio pierrot

  • ๐Ÿฐ #001 - Super Mario 64 Internal Plexus (B3313)
  • my first time 100%ing this hack! the mario.exe shit is really corny but this hack masterfully does atmosphere and it freaked me the fuck out a few times w/o even using jumpscares. levels r eh but theres like a million of them so it's still impressive!!
